When Hayley asked me to be part of her Color Me fabric tour, I had every reason to say yes. Firstly, the fabric looks really cute. Secondly, it is printed on my favorite line of solid fabrics: Michael Miller’s Cotton Couture Solids. And finally, Norah has been completely obsessed with drawing and coloring lately, so I knew she would LOVE the fabrics.
Color Me has four coloring book style fabrics : two princess themed and two space themed. Two of them are border prints.
For this tour, I made three items. I used the princess border print (‘A Royal Life’) to make a simple dress. It is actually a bit of an experiment for one of the patterns I have in the pipeline. I used the pattern I drew for this dress, but replaced the six pleats in the front by one big box pleat, and added a peter pan collar. I think this could make a sweet option to add to the pattern.
The mustard fabric I used is – what else? – a Cotton Couture solid; more specifically ‘Gold’, which I used so many times before (like here and here and here. And here and here. Oh and here too. Yeah, I think I like that color).
I also made a simple coloring book for Norah; in the tutorial at the end of this post I explain how. She absolutely loved it! She has been coloring in it for hours, with markers, crayons and colored pencils. I hope it never accidentally ends up in the washer 😉
I also made a pen holder in the space fabric with this tutorial.
Tutorial: coloring book
Supplies:
– four rectangular pieces of Color Me fabric
– 2 pieces of batting with the same dimensions (I used fleece)
– sewing machine, pins, thread, scissors
Instructions:
1. Put two pieces of Color Me fabric with right sides together on top of a piece of batting. Stitch all the way around the edges.
2. Cut a turning hole right in the middle of the page. Clip the four corners of the rectangles, and turn right side out.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to create a second page. Put both pages with turning holes together, and stitch them together around the turning hole.
4. Delight a little artist with your fabric coloring book!
